There is / There areThere is / There are

  • There is a mouse in the kitchen! - ¡Hay un ratón en la cocina!
  • There are some cookies in the box. - Hay algunas galletas en la caja.
  • There was a man in the room. - Había un hombre en la habitación.
  • There were men in the room waiting for you. - Había hombres en la habitación esperándote.
  • I think there will be a lot of people at tomorrow’s concert.

There is y there was se usan con sustantivos singulares e incontables. There are y there were se usan con sustantivos plurales.

  • There’s a cat in our garden. - Hay un gato en nuestro jardín.
  • There are two cats in our garden. - Hay dos gatos en nuestro jardín.
  • There are some cats in our garden. - Hay algunos gatos en nuestro jardín.
  • There’s some milk in the fridge. - Hay algo de leche en el frigorífico.
  • There was some food in this lunchbox. - Había algo de comida en esta lonchera.

Contracción

There is se contrae normalmente como there’s.

  • There was something strange in his room. - Había algo extraño en su habitación.
  • There was someone asking for your phone number.

Las oraciones negativas se forman colocando not después de la forma correspondiente de to be: there is not, there are not, there was not, there were not o there will not be.

  • There wasn’t a cat in our garden. - No había ningún gato en nuestro jardín.
  • There won’t be a party next week. - No habrá ninguna fiesta la próxima semana.
  • There isn’t any money in his wallet. - No hay dinero en su cartera.
  • There aren’t any pencils on my desk.

  • There isn’t anyone in the room. - No hay nadie en la habitación.
  • There wasn’t anything interesting in that city.

  • There was no cat in our garden. - No había ningún gato en nuestro jardín.
  • There are no pencils on my desk. - No hay lápices en mi escritorio.
  • There is no money in his wallet. - No hay dinero en su cartera.
  • There is no one in the room. - No hay nadie en la habitación.
  • There was nothing interesting in that city. - No había nada interesante en esa ciudad.

Pregunta

Las preguntas generales se forman colocando la forma de to be antes de there: is there, are there, was there, were there o will there be.

  • Is there a cat outside? - ¿Hay un gato afuera?
  • Will there be a party next week? - ¿Habrá una fiesta la próxima semana?
  • Were there any pencils on my desk? - ¿Había lápices en mi escritorio?
  • Is there any money in your pockets?

  • Is there anything I can do for you? - ¿Hay algo que pueda hacer por ti?
  • Was there anybody in my room? - ¿Había alguien en mi habitación?

En las respuestas breves se repite la estructura there is o there are en forma afirmativa o negativa, según corresponda.

  • Is there a cat outside? - ¿Hay un gato afuera?
  • Yes, there is. - Sí, hay uno.
  • No, there isn’t. - No, no hay ninguno.
  • Was there anybody in my room? - ¿Había alguien en mi habitación?
  • Yes, there was. - Sí, había alguien.
  • No, there wasn’t. - No, no había nadie.

  • Who is there in my room? - ¿Quién está en mi habitación?
  • Why are there so many people? - ¿Por qué hay tanta gente?
  • How much money is there in your wallet?
