Afirmación

El Future Continuous o Future Progressive se forma con will + be + verbo principal terminado en -ing.

Estructura: sujeto + will + be + verbo-ing.

En el inglés moderno, will se usa con todas las personas y números. Shall puede aparecer con I y we, pero su uso es formal, poco frecuente o literario. En la conversación cotidiana, se prefiere will.

• I shall be working here. — Estaré trabajando aquí.
• He will be drinking tea with us. — Él estará bebiendo té con nosotros.
• We will be dancing all night. — Estaremos bailando toda la noche.

Contracciones

• will = ’ll
• I’ll be sitting there. — Estaré sentado allí.
• She’ll be sending some letters. — Ella estará enviando algunas cartas.
• shall también puede contraerse como ’ll, aunque esta forma es poco frecuente y formal.

Negación

La forma negativa se construye colocando not después de will o shall.

Estructura: sujeto + will not + be + verbo-ing.

• I will not be working here. — No estaré trabajando aquí.
• He will not be drinking tea with us. — Él no estará bebiendo té con nosotros.
• We will not be dancing all night. — No estaremos bailando toda la noche.

• will not = won’t
• I won’t be working here. — No estaré trabajando aquí.
• shall not = shan’t, una contracción formal y poco frecuente.
• We shan’t be dancing all night. — No estaremos bailando toda la noche.

Pregunta

Para formar una pregunta general, se coloca will o shall antes del sujeto.

Estructura: will + sujeto + be + verbo-ing?

• Will I be working here? — ¿Estaré trabajando aquí?
• Will he be drinking tea with us? — ¿Él estará bebiendo té con nosotros?
• Will we be dancing all night? — ¿Estaremos bailando toda la noche?

Para formar una pregunta específica, se coloca una palabra o expresión interrogativa al principio. El resto del orden es el mismo que en la pregunta general.

• What will I be doing here? — ¿Qué estaré haciendo aquí?
• Who will he be drinking tea with? — ¿Con quién estará bebiendo té?
• How long will we be dancing? — ¿Cuánto tiempo estaremos bailando?

Acciones continuas en un momento específico del futuro

El Future Continuous se utiliza para describir acciones que estarán ocurriendo en un momento específico o durante un período determinado del futuro.

• I will be waiting for you here at 9 a.m. tomorrow. — Estaré esperándote aquí mañana a las nueve de la mañana.
• Tom will be playing football all day next Sunday. — Tom estará jugando al fútbol todo el día el próximo domingo.
• This time next week I will be flying to Berlin. — A esta misma hora la próxima semana estaré volando a Berlín.

El momento exacto también puede indicarse mediante otra acción breve, expresada normalmente en Present Simple.

• I will be cooking dinner when she leaves. — Estaré cocinando la cena cuando ella se vaya.
• He will be washing the car when the postman comes. — Él estará lavando el coche cuando llegue el cartero.
• They will be watching the game when the rain starts. — Estarán viendo el partido cuando empiece a llover.

Acciones simultáneas en el futuro

Se utiliza para describir varias acciones que estarán ocurriendo al mismo tiempo en el futuro.

• I will be making cocktails and Ann will be meeting guests. — Yo estaré preparando cócteles y Ana estará recibiendo a los invitados.
• Jane will be listening to music while Jake will be reading a book. — Jane estará escuchando música mientras Jake estará leyendo un libro.
• They will be sitting, watching a movie and eating pie. — Estarán sentados, viendo una película y comiendo tarta.

Eventos esperados o previstos

El Future Continuous puede describir un evento que se espera que ocurra en el futuro, por ejemplo, debido a un acuerdo, una previsión o una situación ya establecida. No expresa por sí solo que el evento sea inevitable.

• According to the forecast, it will be raining tomorrow. — Según el pronóstico, mañana estará lloviendo.
• We have made a deal. I shall be working instead of her next month. — Hemos llegado a un acuerdo. Estaré trabajando en su lugar el próximo mes.
• We have made an arrangement. I will be meeting her soon. — Hemos hecho un acuerdo. Me reuniré con ella pronto.

Acciones planificadas

El Future Continuous puede usarse para hablar de acciones planificadas que ocurrirán en el futuro. Sin embargo, para planes y citas ya organizados, en el inglés actual suele preferirse el Present Continuous.

• She will be meeting Jake’s parents this evening. — Ella se reunirá con los padres de Jake esta tarde.
• She is meeting Jake’s parents this evening. — Ella se reunirá con los padres de Jake esta tarde.

• Lara will be flying to New York tomorrow morning. — Lara volará a Nueva York mañana por la mañana.
• Lara is flying to New York tomorrow morning. — Lara volará a Nueva York mañana por la mañana.

• I will be attending the party tonight. — Asistiré a la fiesta esta noche.
• I am attending the party tonight. — Asistiré a la fiesta esta noche.

Pregunta cortés sobre planes futuros

El Future Continuous puede utilizarse para preguntar cortésmente por los planes o las acciones de otra persona, sin dar a entender que se espera necesariamente una respuesta afirmativa.

• Will you be using this book for long? — ¿Vas a usar este libro durante mucho tiempo?
• Will your sister be visiting you? — ¿Tu hermana te visitará?
• Will she be staying here for long? — ¿Se quedará aquí mucho tiempo?

El Future Continuous suele utilizarse cuando la acción se sitúa en una hora exacta, un intervalo o un período específico del futuro. Estos marcadores ayudan a indicar el momento o la duración:

• at 5 o’clock — a las 5 en punto
• at that moment — en ese momento
• this time tomorrow — a esta hora mañana
• the same time next week — a la misma hora la próxima semana

• meanwhile — mientras tanto, entretanto
• meantime — mientras tanto, entretanto
• in the meantime — mientras tanto, entretanto

• from two till three — de dos a tres
• from Monday till Friday — de lunes a viernes
• from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. tomorrow — mañana, de 10 a 11 de la mañana
• from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. the day after tomorrow — pasado mañana, de 6 a 9 de la tarde
